The graphics faculty will select 3-5 papers from the contemporary research literature. The list of papers will be published 1-2 months prior to the Qual exam period. These papers will cover the primary areas of graphics research, including at least 1 paper from each of the modeling, rendering, and animation areas.
Students are expected to carefully study all selected papers and to familiarize themselves with the background literature cited by these papers.
The Qual exam will be scheduled in a 2 hour time slot and will be an oral exam. The papers selected for the Qual will provide the initial focal point for questioning. However, the exam committee may ask questions about computer graphics in general, especially material covered in CS 418 and CS 419. The committee may also, at its discretion, pose questions drawn from other areas of computer science as they relate to computer graphics. Such topics would include, but are not necessarily limited to: theory (computational geometry), AI (computer vision and motion planning), operating systems/networking (multimedia) and human computer interaction (graphical user interfaces).
While writing surfaces (e.g., whiteboards) will be available during the exam, students are encouraged to bring along any additional materials that will aid them in illustrating their answers to questions.
